Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is used to correct droopy eyelids, puffiness around the eyes, and reduce sagging skin most often associated with aging. The cosmetic procedure involves removing excess skin and fat from the upper and or lower eyelids that results in a long lasting, rested, alert, and more youthful appearance. Blepharoplasty surgery can be performed as a single procedure, but usually accompanies a brow lift or facelift to produce amazing results. In 2016 209,020 eyelid procedures in the US, up 2 percent from 2015.

Double Eyelid SurgeryDouble eyelid surgery or Asian Blepharoplasty is another type of procedure used to create a crease on the upper eyelid (double eyelid). This aesthetic procedure is continuing gain awareness and increased popularity as it was one of the top six aesthetic procedures performed in 2014.

Eyelid Surgery ProcedureThe surgeon performs by making external incisions along the natural lines of the eyelids. On the upper eyelid, an incision is made along the fold or crease of the upper eyelid. Excess fat and loose skin is then removed. Small sutures are then made to close the incision. For the lower eyelid, incisions are made just below the lower lashes to also remove excess fat or loose skin. In some cases, the fat is redistributed in order to remove the puffiness or “eye bags.”

Blepharoplasty surgery normally takes from one to two hours depending on the patient. An anaesthesia sedative is given to provide comfort during operation.

Eyelid Surgery RecoveryWhile Blepharoplasty recovery times differ for each patient, stitches remain in both eyelids for about a week to ensure proper healing. Swelling and bruising often occurs but disappears within one to two weeks. An ointment is prescribed to keep the stitches lubricated while eye drops are used to relieve any burning or itching sensations while preventing infection. It is recommended to keep the head elevated to accelerate healing and relieve discomfort.

Eyelid Surgery CostThe average cost for a lower or upper eyelid surgery is around $3,500, while an operation on both eyelids is around $5,000. When combined with other cosmetic surgery procedures, additional Blepharoplasty surgery discounts can be considered.
