Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers can present an excellent opportunity to turn back time without having to consider plastic surgery. As we age, we begin to visibly lose facial volume. Fillers are used to add volume to help contour the face resulting in a more youthful and refreshed appearance.

Areas Of Treatment

Dermal fillers, commonly known as injectables, volumizers or soft-tissue fillers temporarily correct noticeable conditions associated with age such as wrinkle lines and creases. Injectables are used to plump-up the cheeks, areas of the jaw and lips. The back of the hands are also suited for treatment as well.

Dermal Fillers - Treatment Areas
When dermal fillers are paired with other injectables like Botox or Xeomin, the combined treatment is often referred to as a liquid facelift.

Types Of Injectables

Types Of Injectable Fillers - Spirit Lift Plastic Surgery
A range of dermal fillers are available and are manufactured with either synthetic or natural components. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural component readily found between tissues of the joints or around the eye areas when young (think baby’s skin), but progressively decreases as we age. HA has the capacity to absorb approximately 1,000 times its weight in water. This ability plays an invaluable role in facial rejuvenation. Soft tissue fillers made with HA have the inherent capabilitiy to remain plump while feeling smooth under the skin. Using fillers made with hyaluronic acid are very popular choices in facial rejuvenation.

In addition, research has shown that collagen production is stimulated with the continued use of hyaluronic acid fillers. Collagen plays a crucial role to keeping the skin supple and firm. The working combination of these genetic components are beneficial to healthy vibrant skin. Over time, patients may benefit by having less filler and may possibly extend their sessions between scheduled treatments.

Juverderm - Restylane - Belotero
The three injectables made from hyaluronic acid that are most often recommended are Juevederm (Ultra, Ultra Plus, Voluma & Volbella) and Restylane.

Each product is primarily designed and FDA approved to treat the laugh lines surrounding the mouth referred to as the Nasolabial Folds. However, fillers are used to volumize or fill in other areas on the face like the cheeks and lips. Each different filler can produce a slightly different result. During consultation, the supervising plastic surgeon can determine which injectable, amount and technique is best.

How Treatment Is Administered

Injectable Treatment
Like Botox or Xeomin, treatment is administered in similar fashion. A numbing cream is applied to minimize discomfort as the filler is injected through a small needle upon desired areas of the face. The lip and the nose are often the areas associated with the most discomfort.

A session can typically take up to an hour depending on treatment.

Some type of pain or discomfort is almost always associated with aesthetic procedures. A little bleeding and bruising around the sites of injection should be considered a normal part of the process. Within 36 hours of treatment both pain and skin discoloration should have subsided.

Volumizers - Dermal Fillers
Once treated, the desired results are almost always achieved. However, individual results may vary. Some patients have expressed that one injectable filler is worth it and then another may disagree. While everyone is similar, we are ultimately unique. It may be necessary to try different filler treatment/s to discover which one provides the best result.

Depending on the area of the face treated, skin condition and injection technique, the desired effects of fillers can possibly last up to a year. Continued treatment with soft tissue fillers will be necessary to maintain desired appearance.

Volumizers present an ideal treatment for those who don’t have a lot of time to heal or are not quite ready for a facelift. The trend for injectable treatments is growing.
